FILM 4WARD 2021 PROJECTS ANNOUNCED
FilmPEI announces the selection of four locally-produced film projects from a diverse slate of filmmakers for the 2021 Film 4Ward program
Friday, December 18, 2020 (CHARLOTTETOWN, PE): FilmPEI is excited to announce the recipients of the 2021 Film 4Ward program, an incubator for film production on PEI.
Representing a diversity of Island voices, the four filmmaking teams and their projects are:
● Keara Higgins and Sarah Segal-Lazar – “Elvira”. A short comedy about a woman living in a small, rural community who becomes convinced that her chicken can solve crimes. The only problem is there aren’t any.
● Jeana MacIsaac and Luc Trottier – “In My Heart”. Based on a true story this poignant short film is about the selflessness of a birth mother and how the adoption process can change a baby’s life.
● Ronak Nanda and Jahan Bloch – “Paradox of Life”. A short drama about an immigrant health care worker living through a pandemic on an emotional journey to figure out the new dynamics of life, relationships, his duties and dreams.
● Mark Sandiford and Millefiore Clarkes – “Grandmothers”. GRANDMOTHERS is a lyrical, art-based, documentary that lends deep listening to, and seeks universal wisdom from, three formidable women elders from diverse communities.
“Now in our third season of Film 4Ward, I am thrilled to see such a diverse cross-section of new talent entering the program. It is also heartening to see that gender parity is occurring naturally in the selected projects.” Renee Laprise, FilmPEI Executive Director.
The 2021 Film 4Ward applications were assessed by a jury of local and off-Island industry professionals. Leveraging industry expertise across PEI and Canada, participants will be trained by industry professionals through a series of workshops and job shadowing opportunities, starting in January. The four film projects will receive production funding of up to $20,000 and in-kind facilities and services. Films are expected to be shot between February and April, with final delivery at the end of June.
Film 4Ward aims to support PEI’s film and television sector through training opportunities and production funding. It is funded by the Department of Economic Growth, Tourism and Culture through Innovation PEI and the Culture Action Plan, with additional funding provided by Telefilm Canada and CBC.

Congratulations Brian Sharp!
We are happy to announce that Brian was awarded the Lifetime Membership Award at this year’s AGM.
Brian has worked in the film and TV industry for 25 years in a variety of capacities. In his first two years on set, he was as grip, gaffer, electric, carpenter, security, camera assistant, camera operator, actor, and unit manager.
The next seven years he spent as an editor (both film and video) and on-line editor in video, on TV projects. His dream jobs have included being the special fx supervisor on a series, director of photography and visual fx artist on several commercials, and producer and production manager for visual fx, commercials and TV series.
Brian originally came to PEI to run Trapeze animation and eventually pivoted to an entirely new career as the inventor and owner of the Onset Assistant. This proprietary communication system is used on productions all over North America and has been especially useful with the current Covid-19 protocols on set.
Even at his busiest Brian has always been so generous with his time offering workshops and one on one mentoring to a variety of emerging filmmakers. He’s also been instrumental in developing the film incentives within the province.
FilmPEI would like to thank Brian for being awesome by offering him this year’s lifetime membership award!
Welcome to New Board Members!
FilmPEI is pleased to announce two new members to the FilmPEI Board: Tina Yu and Sparrow McGowan! Welcome to the team!
